I grew up with westerns playing in the background. My mom always had one on. Wide open plains. Dusty towns. Big skies. Horses riding toward the horizon. Even if I wasn’t watching closely, those landscapes were imprinted somewhere in my imagination. The American West always felt cinematic to me.
And years later, when I finally did the long drives through parts of it myself, I understood why. The scale is real. The silence is real. The beauty of the way the light hits red rock at sunset? Also very real.
But I’ll be honest. After hours in the car, as beautiful as it was, it was still hours in the car. And that’s why rail travel through the Southwest feels like such a gift.
The Landscape Becomes the Experience
When you travel by train between Denver and Salt Lake City on the Rockies to the Red Rocks route, the West unfolds in front of you without you having to grip the steering wheel.
You wind through Colorado mountains, follow the curves of the Colorado River, and enter the sculpted red rock landscapes near Moab. Overnight stays in Glenwood Springs and Moab allow you to explore these towns instead of just passing through them.
You see:
• Towering canyon walls
• Remote desert stretches
• Historic ghost towns
• Alpine forests
• Vast red rock formations
But instead of focusing on road signs and GPS directions, you’re free to actually take it in.
It’s the West — Without the Driving Fatigue
I’ve done the long stretches of highway—the “just one more hour” mindset. The snack stops and gas stations, not to mention trying to time bathroom breaks.
There’s a certain romance to a road trip, but there’s also fatigue.
Rail travel removes that part completely.
You settle into your seat. Panoramic windows frame the scenery. The train curves alongside rivers and through canyons while you sit back, sip something refreshing, and simply watch. It’s immersive without being exhausting.
Daylight Travel Makes It Cinematic
One of my favorite things about this journey is that it’s designed for daylight viewing.
You’re not traveling overnight and missing the scenery. You experience the full drama of the landscape in natural light — the shifting shadows on canyon walls, the deep blues of mountain lakes, the way desert colors intensify as the sun lowers.
It feels like watching one of those old westerns, only you’re inside the scene.
Elevated, Yet Grounded
This isn’t commuter rail. It’s thoughtful onboard service, regionally inspired meals, and storytelling about the region’s geology and history. You travel comfortably during the day and rest each evening in destination hotels.
It strikes that perfect balance between adventure and ease. You still feel the scale of the West. You experience it without the road fatigue.
The West, Slowed Down
The American West has always symbolized openness, possibility, and space since people arrived in the Americas. It was seen as a land of opportunities. Experiencing it by rail allows you to absorb that space rather than rush through it.
You notice:
The layers in the rock formations.
The way the river snakes beside the tracks.
The quiet between towns.
It becomes less about covering miles and more about being present in the landscape. And for anyone who grew up with westerns playing in the background, as I did, there’s something full-circle about seeing it this way.
Big sky.
Open land.
No steering wheel required.
If the beauty of the West has ever called to you, this is one of the most relaxing and immersive ways to answer it.
