K’gari (Fraser Island): Australia’s Sand Island Where Adventure Meets Serenity

There are places in Australia that linger with you long after you’ve returned home, places that feel ancient, spiritual, wild, and absolutely unforgettable. For me, K’gari (Fraser Island) is one of those rare destinations. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit twice, once in 2016 and again just recently, and each time the island offered something completely new and completely magical.

My First Journey: K’gari Up Close

My first visit in 2016 was a full immersion. I stayed overnight at Kingfisher Bay Resort, tucked among the trees and overlooking the water. It was the perfect base for exploring the island, and the moment I arrived, I could feel that K’gari was unlike anywhere else I had ever been.

The full-day island tour gave me my first taste of her beauty. I walked through an ancient rainforest that—against all logic—grows straight out of a sand dune system. I swam in the jewel-blue waters of Lake McKenzie, waded through fresh water flowing over soft white sand at Eli Creek, and stood before the iconic shipwreck resting proudly on the beach.

K’gari’s wildlife didn’t disappoint either. I spotted wild dingoes trotting along the coastline, while back at the resort, a kangaroo stared at me from my balcony, having dropped by to check on the new visitor.

One of the highlights was boarding a seaplane and soaring over the island. Seeing the butterfly-shaped lakes and endless sweep of dunes from above felt like looking at another world entirely.

The island’s culinary scene surprised me, too—fresh dishes infused with native bush ingredients that showcased the flavors of Australia. And then… There was the archery. Let’s just say I learned the hard way that a strong flat white before shooting a bow was not a wise choice. I shook like a Hawaiian dashboard doll and still somehow managed to hit a bull’s-eye—pure luck and plenty of laughs.

By the end of the stay, K’gari had worked her way deep into my heart.

My Second Visit: A Day of Adventure by Sea

My return trip with my partner was from a completely different angle—this time as a day trip from Hervey Bay. Instead of exploring by 4WD on land, we discovered K’gari’s coastline from the water.

The day began with tea on board as we cruised across the calm bay. Once we reached the island’s eastern side, the fun really began. We snorkeled in the crystal-clear shallows, climbed the tallest sand dune that opened to breathtaking views, and were even pulled behind a speed boat on a float—an unexpected thrill that delivered pure joy and hysterical laughter.

We kayaked through the mangroves, drifting quietly with the current, and floated down a creek surrounded by forest and bird calls. It was active, refreshing, and completely invigorating, truly perfect for travelers who love to move, explore, and soak in nature from every angle.

Why K’gari Belongs on Your Australia Itinerary

Two trips. Two totally different experiences. One unforgettable island.

Whether you prefer hiking and hidden lakes, guided 4WD adventure, wildlife encounters, or water-based action with snorkeling and kayaking, K’gari delivers it all. It’s ideal for:

  • Adventure lovers
  • Nature seekers
  • Couples
  • Families
  • Photographers
  • Anyone who needs to breathe deeply again
  • and works well for those with time or those who can only grab a day

K’gari is a reminder of why I fell in love with Australia all those years ago, its wild beauty, its warm spirit, and its ability to transform you in the simplest, most unexpected moments.

Holiday Things to Do in NYC: A Whirlwind 24-Hour Adventure

New York City in the holiday season has a magic all its own — and even though Cheryl and I were in town for a whirlwind 24 hours for the Dominican Republic Roadshow, we were not going to miss out on soaking up some of that famous NYC sparkle.

So lace up your shoes and get ready to explore with us, because the best part about the city at Christmas is that you can experience so much holiday cheer without spending a fortune (unless, of course, you shop like I did… and come home with a fabulous new faux-fur coat!).

Macy’s Holiday Windows & Herald Square

We kicked off our mini holiday tour with the classic Macy’s displays — a must-see tradition that instantly puts you in the spirit. Several of the windows were interactive games, and of course, Cheryl and I had to try them… I may or may not have beaten her three times in a row. (I’m sure she’ll want a rematch!)

Herald Square was buzzing, festive, and full of that unmistakable NYC energy.

Bryant Park Winter Village

Bryant Park’s Winter Village is one of my favorite holiday stops — a sparkling maze of artisan shops, twinkling décor, and festive flavors. We grabbed a delicious bratwurst from the German Bratwurst stand and topped it off with hot cocoa, which hit the spot on a chilly day.

It’s truly the perfect mix of cozy and magical.

Fifth Avenue Storefronts

From Saks to Cartier to the boutiques lining Fifth Avenue, the storefront décor is a show in itself. You could spend an entire evening strolling this stretch, just taking in the artistry, lights, and creativity. No admission needed — just wide-eyed wonder.

Times Square (Because You Have To!)

Times Square may not scream holiday, but it does scream NYC — and it’s always worth the stop. Bright, loud, iconic… and the perfect backdrop for those “we did NYC!” photos.

Rockefeller Center

We swung by Rockefeller Center for a peek at the rink and decorations. While the tree wasn’t lit yet, the area was still buzzing with excitement as crews prepared for the big reveal. Even in its pre-glow state, it’s a special place to stand and soak it all in.

Radio City Music Hall

A quick stroll past the famous marquee reminded us that the Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular is one of the most beloved holiday traditions in the city. Even if you don’t catch a show, the atmosphere outside is filled with nostalgic charm.

Hudson Yards & The Vessel

Next stop: the shimmering holiday displays at Hudson Yards. The Vessel makes for a dramatic backdrop, and the shops are beautifully decorated this time of year. If you want modern, upscale holiday vibes — this is the place.

Rooftop Magic at The Haven

We tucked in a cozy break at The Haven, a rooftop bar that gave us a festive breather from all the walking. Warm drinks, city views, and holiday ambiance? Yes, please.

A Classic NYC Deli Breakfast

No visit to New York is complete without grabbing breakfast at a deli — and let’s be honest, you just can’t beat an authentic New York bagel. It’s the perfect way to fuel up before heading home (or diving into another busy day in the city).

A Festive NYC Escape, Even in 24 Hours

What I love most about visiting New York during the holidays is that you can feel the magic without spending a dime. Strolls, windows, lights, parks, shops, displays — the city becomes one big open-air celebration.

But of course, if you want to snag a little something special for yourself, you might come home with a fun new coat, too. 😉

Whether you’re planning a day trip or a complete weekend escape, NYC is the perfect place to spark that holiday spirit.

If you’d like help planning a festive getaway — or scoring discounted Broadway tickets while you’re there — reach out. I’m here to help you Return to Your Happy Place, one holiday adventure at a time.

Why Jamaica Stays in My Heart: Giving Back Through Travel with the Sandals Foundation

Jamaica is one of those destinations that wraps around you like a warm hug from the moment you arrive, vibrant, joyful, full of rhythm and color, and home to some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. I’ve visited many times over the years, and each time I return, I’m reminded that the beauty of Jamaica isn’t just in the beaches or the sunsets, it’s in the hearts of its people.

During my most recent visit this September, I had the opportunity to reconnect with that heart in a deeper way. As part of my stay at Sandals Dunn’s River, I donated to the Sandals Foundation School Support Program, which provides books, supplies, classroom resources, and much-needed support to local schools across Jamaica.

This wasn’t my first time contributing, and it likely won’t be my last. Years ago, I took part in the Sandals Foundation’s Reading Road Trip, and that morning will forever stay with me. Reading to children, seeing their smiles, listening to their questions, and feeling their pure excitement for learning; it touched me in a way I still carry today. It’s an experience that lives in both my mind and my heart, and it’s one of the many reasons I continue to support education efforts in Jamaica whenever I return.

Travel Can Change Lives—Including Your Own

Many travelers don’t realize how far their vacation dollars go in the Caribbean. When you choose a resort that actively invests in its communities, your trip becomes more than a getaway; it becomes a positive footprint.

The Sandals Foundation works year-round to support:

  • Early childhood education
  • Literacy initiatives
  • After-school programs
  • Teacher training
  • School infrastructure
  • Youth mentorship and community development

My contributions over the years—big or small—always feel meaningful knowing they put tools directly into the hands of Jamaican students—future leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and dreamers.

After the Storms, Jamaica Needs Us More Than Ever

With this season’s hurricane impacting parts of the island, supporting Jamaica isn’t just about tourism; it’s about resilience and recovery. One of the best ways we can help is to continue visiting. Jamaica’s people depend on tourism, and their warmth, hospitality, and spirit remain stronger than ever.

Travel truly helps communities rebuild.

Your visit helps keep locals employed, keeps programs funded, and supports the families that make Jamaica such a beloved destination.

How You Can Travel With Purpose

Whether you stay at a Sandals or Beaches resort or visit the island independently, there are countless ways to make your trip meaningful:

  • Participate in a Sandals Foundation activity (Reading Road Trips resume during select times)
  • Bring a few extra school supplies in your luggage
  • Donate directly to a vetted program
  • Choose locally owned excursions, guides, and craft markets
  • Support community tourism initiatives that allow Jamaicans to share their stories and culture

You don’t have to do something big to make an impact. Just showing up with intention and choosing where you spend your travel dollars matters.

Jamaica Will Always Have a Piece of My Heart

Every time I leave, I take a little bit of Jamaica with me, its kindness, its rhythm, its strength, its soul. And I always return feeling inspired, grateful, and connected.

If you’re thinking about your next Caribbean escape and want to travel with purpose, I’d love to help you craft a journey that lets you experience Jamaica’s beauty and support the communities that make it so special.

Reach out anytime, Jamaica is ready to welcome you back with open arms.

A Taste of Nanuku Resort Fiji

After a long flight across the Pacific, stepping onto Fijian soil always feels like coming home. The air is softer, the smiles are brighter, and that first heartfelt “Bula!” reminds you that you’ve arrived somewhere truly special.

During my recent journey through Fiji, I had the privilege of spending time at Nanuku Resort — a stunning coastal retreat on Viti Levu that blends barefoot luxury with authentic cultural connection. Here, every guest is like an extended family member.

One of my most memorable moments came from meeting our villa momma, a remarkable woman whose warmth and laughter instantly made us feel at ease. She gave us a personal tour of our villa, pointing out every thoughtful detail that makes a stay at Nanuku so unique — from the stocked kitchen, dining, and living space, and the incredible bedroom suites with their traditional Fijian flair, all looking out onto your own private backyard with a plunge pool and beach access. Nanuka offers a variety of options to accommodate even larger multi-generational or friend groups traveling together. Perfect for families and couples alike, given the resort layout. It is like having your own private beach house.

I’ve shared a short YouTube video below so you can meet her yourself and experience the joy she brings to her work each day. Her pride in the resort, and in sharing her culture, reflects the true heart of Fiji — its people.

Beyond the luxurious villas and ocean views, Nanuku offers countless opportunities to connect — whether it’s joining a local cooking class, taking part in a traditional kava ceremony during a village visit, relaxing in the spa, or spending time crafting your own cocktails with the resort’s bartender. These experiences go beyond simple relaxation; they immerse you in the soul of the islands.

For me, Nanuku embodies what I love most about travel to the South Pacific — the way beauty and authenticity coexist so effortlessly. You arrive as a guest, but you leave with lifelong memories and a piece of Fiji in your heart.

So, if you’re dreaming of a place where time slows down, where every smile feels genuine, and where the ocean seems to breathe with you, Nanuku Resort is waiting.

Vinaka vakalevu (thank you very much), Fiji, for reminding me once again what it means to Return to Your Happy Place.
