The Allure of Shells and the Benefits of a Beach Walk

There’s something special about visiting North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I recently returned from a trip to check in on my folks, and each evening after the day’s work, I found myself drawn to the shore. The peaceful sound of the waves and the salty breeze provided the perfect backdrop for ending my day with a leisurely stroll.

Walking on the beach is not just a simple activity—it’s a gentle escape that rejuvenates the soul.

There’s an undeniable allure to the way the sand shifts beneath your feet, the sight of seashells scattered along the shoreline, and the constant yet comforting sound of waves rolling in and out. This simple walk connects you to nature in a profound way, allowing you to reset from the fast pace of everyday life.

One of the things that makes a beach walk so special is the treasure hunt for shells.

Each shell holds a story: its journey, the waters it traveled through, and the unique marks that shaped its surface. As I strolled along the beach, I was captivated by the variety of shells I found—some delicate and small, others robust and patterned, each one a little masterpiece. Collecting shells always brings a sense of calm and wonder, a reminder that the simplest things often carry the most beauty. It’s like discovering a hidden world that has always been there, waiting for us to pay attention.

These shells are not just beautiful souvenirs of a beach walk; they carry with them a sense of serenity. Holding a shell up to my ear, I could almost hear the ocean’s whispering reminder to slow down. For me, the act of collecting shells during my evening strolls felt like a form of meditation—a chance to focus on the present and enjoy life’s small wonders.

Beyond the beauty of the shells, there are so many physical and mental benefits to walking on the beach.

The sand provides natural resistance, making each step a mini workout, while the fresh air and sound of the waves do wonders for reducing stress and improving mood. Walking barefoot is particularly therapeutic—it’s a practice known as “earthing,” which is said to help balance energy, reduce inflammation, and even improve sleep. Personally, I’ve always felt more grounded, relaxed, and in tune with myself after a walk on the sand, as if I’m shedding layers of stress with each step.

Every walk felt like a chance to breathe in the salty air, watch the sun dip below the horizon, and let the day’s worries wash away with the tide. In those moments, it was just me, the vast sky, and the gentle rhythm of the sea—a reminder that there’s always room for moments of peace, even amidst a busy life.

My recent visit to North Myrtle Beach reminded me of the beauty that simplicity holds in the charm of a shell, the rhythm of a walk, and the healing power of nature. No matter where our journeys take us, I hope we all find time for these leisurely strolls, these simple escapes—they return us, in the end, to our happy place.

Discover the Charm of St. Kitts

While I’ve yet to visit St. Kitts personally, I recently completed the island’s specialist certification course. I attended a delightful tourism dinner event hosted by the dynamic duo of Cyndi Miller Aird of Miller Aird Destination Marketing and Deborah Traussi of DEB Marketing at The Breakers on the Ocean in Spring Lake, NJ. The island’s allure, history, and natural beauty were truly captivating. I am excited to share my top 10 must-see attractions and experiences for your future travels and mine to St. Kitts.

Top 10 Must-See Attractions

The scenic railway tour is a one-of-a-kind experience, riding along the old sugar railways. As you travel past abandoned sugar plantations and churches, the island’s stunning beauty unfolds before you, offering a glimpse into its rich past.

2. Romney Manor & Caribelle-Batik
Romney Manor, a historic 12-acre estate, now houses Caribelle-Batik, where artisans showcase the traditional batik technique through live demonstrations. Visitors can even partake in a make-your-own batik experience. The estate is home to ancient petroglyphs and the ruins of an old rum distillery, adding to its historic appeal.

3. Basseterre
The island’s capital, Basseterre, is rich in colonial charm. Notable highlights include Independence Square, the Circus, Berkeley Memorial, and incredible 18th-century churches. Don’t forget to visit the National Museum in the historic Old Treasury for a deeper dive into the island’s past.

4. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park
Perched high atop a volcanic rock, this UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts sweeping views and fascinating military history. Built over a century by African slave labor, Brimstone Hill is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

5. Ziplining Through the Rainforest
For a more adventurous day out, ziplining through the island’s lush rainforest provides stunning views and a thrilling way to reconnect with nature. With five separate courses to choose from, there’s an option for every level of adrenaline seeker.

6. Hike the Volcano
For those passionate about hiking, scaling the dormant Mt. Liamuiga offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure. The guided hike takes you through waterfalls, rainforests, and cloud forests, culminating in spectacular views from the peak.

7. Sail to Nevis
Board a catamaran and set sail for neighboring Nevis. Snorkel in the vibrant turquoise waters, teeming with marine life, or relax on Pinney’s Beach with a famous Killer Bee cocktail from Sunshine’s Bar.

8. A Day at the Beach
St. Kitts is home to several beaches perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. South Frigate Bay, South Friars Bay, and Cockleshell Bay all offer great beach bars and opportunities to enjoy jet skiing, flyboarding, and other activities.

Dining Under the Stars: Unforgettable Outback Experiences in Australia’s Northern Territory

Unforgettable Outback Experiences in Australia’s Northern Territory

During my two-week journey through Australia’s Northern Territory in 2015, I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing the “Sounds of Silence” dinner—an evening that left a lasting impression. While the vast landscapes and rich Indigenous culture of the Outback are enough to capture anyone’s heart, these incredible dining experiences offered by Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia elevate your connection to the land in ways you can’t imagine.

Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia has curated three distinct dining events—each blending gourmet cuisine with the Outback’s rugged beauty and profound history. Let me share why these experiences are a must when exploring Australia’s Red Centre.

Tali Wiru – Intimate Dining with a View

Tali Wiru, meaning “beautiful dune,” is a private dining experience perfect for those seeking an exclusive evening surrounded by the beauty of the Outback. Imagine a secluded table for two atop a dune, sipping champagne as the sun sets over the iconic Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

This is more than just dinner—it’s a multi-sensory experience. With a four-course meal highlighting local flavors, paired with premium Australian wines, Tali Wiru lets you savor the taste of the Outback while being serenaded by a didgeridoo performance and Indigenous storytelling. Limited to 20 guests per evening, it offers an intimate, peaceful escape under the stars.

Sounds of Silence – A Feast for the Senses

I had the privilege of experiencing Sounds of Silence firsthand, and I can say without a doubt that it was one of the highlights of my time in the Northern Territory. Set in the heart of the Outback, this shared dining experience begins with a champagne toast as the sun dips behind Uluru, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It’s a moment of serenity and beauty that sets the stage for an unforgettable evening.

The dinner itself is a three-course buffet of local Australian dishes, enjoyed under the vast expanse of stars. The star talk is what made it extra special for me. A local expert shares stories of the Southern Hemisphere’s constellations, making you feel even more connected to the land. Combine that with the hauntingly beautiful didgeridoo music in the background, and it becomes an experience that engages all the senses.

Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner – A Journey Through Storytelling

For those looking to go beyond just a delicious meal, the Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner offers a deep dive into Australia’s rich Indigenous culture. The evening starts with sunset drinks and canapés, but what really sets it apart is the immersive sound and light show that follows.

Through drones, lights, and projections, the Mala story—an important Indigenous tale connected to Uluru—comes to life. This dining experience takes you on a journey through history while also allowing you to savor native flavors in your gourmet dinner hamper. If you want to combine fine dining with cultural immersion, this is an experience not to be missed.

A Dining Experience Like No Other

These dining experiences are more than just meals—they are immersive events that connect you deeply to the land, its people, and its stories. Whether you choose the exclusivity of Tali Wiru, the social magic of Sounds of Silence, or the storytelling journey of Wintjiri Wiru, you’ll leave with more than just a satisfied appetite. You’ll carry with you the magic of the Northern Territory.

If you’re ready to add one of these unforgettable dining experiences to your travel plans, I’d love to help you create a personalized itinerary for your own adventure in Australia’s Outback. Trust me, it’s a journey you’ll never forget.
