Kiwi Country: Discovering the Heart of New Zealand’s Iconic Fruit

I recently returned from an incredible journey to New Zealand’s North Island, with a special focus on the beautiful Northland region. As travel often goes, plans can shift—and in our case, high swells disrupted our scheduled snorkeling tour. But in true Kiwi spirit, we embraced the change and found a new adventure. We were connected with a local guide, Chris Barber of Whangarei Coastal Commuter, who became our driver for the day as we explored waterfalls and stunning coastal spots. One of the best parts of having the right local by your side? The fascinating insights and hidden gems you discover along the way.

So here we are, driving along the winding roads of New Zealand to our first stop—a morning hike to the waterfalls. And let me tell you, all the roads are winding. I don’t think they’ve ever heard of building a straight one! Anyway, as we chatted, Chris asked us if we knew much about the kiwi. Then he goes, “Hang on a second—there’s a spot up ahead where I’ll pull over.”

Apparently, after a recent cyclone, the hedges lining the roadside were replanted, but they missed a section. That small break revealed a stretch of vines neatly arranged on a platform.

I had no idea kiwi grew on vines! It was one of those unexpected moments that made the day so memorable. So, let me share a bit more about this iconic fruit of New Zealand…

A Fruit with Roots: The Origins of Kiwi

While most people associate kiwifruit with New Zealand, its roots trace back to China, where it was originally known as the Chinese gooseberry. The fruit made its way to New Zealand in the early 20th century and quickly found a new home in the country’s rich soils and temperate climate. By the 1950s, New Zealand growers were exporting the fruit, and in a clever marketing move, they renamed it “kiwifruit”—a nod to the country’s beloved flightless bird, the kiwi. Today, New Zealand is recognized worldwide as a premium producer of this small but mighty fruit.

Growing on the Vine: Life of a Kiwi

Kiwifruit grows on vigorous climbing vines, similar to grapevines, and requires careful cultivation. In commercial orchards, vines are trained along pergola-like trellises that support the weight of the heavy fruit and allow for easier maintenance and harvesting. The growing season typically begins in spring with flowering, and the fruit reaches maturity by late summer to autumn—March through May in New Zealand.

As I witnessed during our stop in Northland, the vines were lush and green, suspended along tidy rows supported by wire racks. Seeing them up close gave me a new appreciation for the precision and planning behind kiwi cultivation. The farms often use tall hedge barriers for wind protection and climate control, making that little break in the hedge feel like peeking into a secret garden.

Green vs. Gold: What’s the Difference?

New Zealand is known for producing two primary varieties of kiwifruit: green and gold. The classic green kiwifruit—typically the Hayward variety—has fuzzy brown skin, bright green flesh, and a tart, zesty flavor. It’s the variety many of us grew up eating, packed with fiber and vitamin C.

The newer gold variety—most commonly the SunGold—features smoother, bronze-toned skin and vibrant yellow flesh. It’s sweeter, less tangy, and is often favored for its tropical flavor notes. Gold kiwis are also slightly more delicate and generally command a higher price in markets. Both varieties are nutritional powerhouses, but the gold version boasts even more vitamin C per serving.

Where the Kiwi Grows Best: Notable NZ Regions

While Northland’s warm and humid climate provides favorable conditions, the Bay of Plenty is the undisputed kiwifruit capital of New Zealand. The town of Te Puke even brands itself as the “Kiwifruit Capital of the World.” The region’s fertile volcanic soils, abundant sunshine, and mild winters make it an ideal growing environment.

Other significant growing regions include Nelson at the top of the South Island, as well as parts of Waikato and Hawke’s Bay. Each region contributes to the diversity and volume of New Zealand’s kiwifruit exports, which are managed and marketed globally under the trusted Zespri brand.

What Makes NZ Kiwi So Special?

New Zealand’s kiwifruit is revered globally for good reason. The country’s commitment to sustainable farming practices, cutting-edge horticulture, and quality assurance ensures that each fruit meets high flavor, texture, and nutritional value standards. The natural advantages of New Zealand’s environment—plentiful rainfall, intense sunlight, and rich soils—give the fruit a distinct edge over competitors.

Moreover, the care and pride taken by local growers, often spanning generations, is evident in every bite. Whether you enjoy the tangy bite of a green kiwi or the tropical sweetness of gold, New Zealand-grown kiwifruit delivers a taste that truly stands out on the world stage.

We truly enjoyed the whole day with Chris and our explorations. He was funny and even quizzed us on our way back about some of the tidbits he shared—like the kiwifruit facts—to see if we had been paying attention. I’m happy to report that we earned gold stars.

I’d love to share New Zealand—especially Northland—with you. As a New Zealand Advanced Specialist, I can connect you with the people and experiences that leave lasting impressions and unforgettable memories. And next time you’re at the store picking out a kiwi, be sure to look for that sticker from NZ. It’s more than just a fruit—it’s a little taste of Aotearoa.
