There’s something special about stepping onto an island that feels completely untouched—where the water glows every shade of blue and the only footprints in the sand may be the ones you leave behind. That’s precisely what it feels like to visit Monuriki, one of Fiji’s famed Mamanuca Islands, and the filming location for the movie Cast Away.

What makes my visit even funnier?

I’ve never actually seen the movie.

And yet, this day trip from Matamanoa Island became one of my absolute favorite experiences in Fiji—proving you don’t have to be a movie buff to fall head over heels for this place.

Departing Matamanoa – Setting the Scene

My adventure began on Matamanoa Island, where the team at Purple Turtle welcomed us to the dive center to size us for snorkel gear. Once equipped, we boarded our boat for the short ride to Monuriki.

“Short” does not mean uneventful.

Every moment on the water feels like a postcard—neon turquoise, sapphire streaks, and sunlit ripples dancing around you. Fiji’s blues are in a league of their own.

Arrival at Monuriki – “HELP ME” & Wilson Await

As soon as we stepped onto shore, two familiar icons greeted us:

✔️ The giant “HELP ME”, spelled out in rocks and shells

✔️ Wilson, the famous volleyball

Even having never watched the film, I could feel the fun and nostalgia this place brings for fans—and the pure magic it brings to everyone else. The island is rugged, pristine, peaceful… exactly the kind of place where a story like Cast Away feels believable.

Guided Island Walk – Movie Moments & Island Lessons

Our guides led us on a short hike, pointing out several spots where scenes were filmed. From cliff faces to tucked-away beaches, the stories added a layer of history and fun to the natural beauty around us.

Along the way, we visited the rock etched with names and dates, a tradition carried forward by visitors and guides over the years.

We also enjoyed hands-on lessons in island survival:

• How to build a fire using coconut husks
• The surprising number of coconut varieties
• Which coconuts offer the best drinking water vs. snack-worthy meat

And yes—there were yummy coconut tastings. Fresh coconut water is one of the healthiest natural hydrators you’ll find, rich in electrolytes and gentle on the stomach. Add in the healthy fats from coconut meat, and you’ve got fuel for a perfect beach day.

Snorkeling Heaven – Walk Straight Into the Blue

Monuriki makes snorkeling effortless. You walk from the beach straight into a coral-filled world—schools of fish, soft corals swaying with the tide, and that signature Fiji clarity that lets you see everything below.

Whether you prefer:

• Snorkeling the shoreline
• Floating lazily in the warm waters
• Or simply relaxing on the sand with the sun on your shoulders

…Monuriki gives you space to do it all.

Just remember:

• Wear reef-safe sunscreen
• Reapply often
• Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (the tropical sun here is no joke!)

A Perfect Day Trip—Movie Fan or Not

What I loved most about this experience is that it’s terrific for every type of traveler.

Fans of Cast Away will revel in every reference.

Those who’ve never seen it (like me!) will still be enchanted by the island’s wild, untouched beauty.
