Set-Jetting: Travel Inspired by the Screen

In an era where our entertainment choices profoundly influence our lifestyles, it’s no surprise that travel is one of the sectors most impacted by our screen time. Enter “set-jetting,” a burgeoning travel trend where people plan trips inspired by the locations they see in movies and TV shows. As this trend continues to gain momentum, here’s why set-jetting is capturing the imaginations of travelers worldwide.

The Rise of Set-Jetting

Set-jetting, a term derived from combining “set” (as in film set) and “jet-setting,” involves visiting destinations featured in popular films and television series. This trend has been propelled by the increasing accessibility of global travel and the pervasive influence of visual media on our daily lives. According to a report by Expedia, more than half of travelers have researched or booked trips to destinations after seeing them on screen (Travel + Leisure).

Iconic Destinations and Their On-Screen Appeal

Some destinations have become iconic due to their on-screen portrayals. Here are a few notable examples:

  • New Zealand – The Lord of the Rings: New Zealand’s stunning landscapes were immortalized in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fans can explore the rolling hills of Hobbiton in Matamata, the volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park, and the dramatic fjords of Milford Sound (Travel + Leisure).
  • Tahiti – Mutiny on the Bounty: The breathtaking island of Tahiti provided the exotic backdrop for the classic film “Mutiny on the Bounty. Visitors can experience the pristine beaches and vibrant culture that captivates audiences (theweek).
  • Hawaii – Jurassic Park: Hawaii’s lush, tropical landscapes served as the setting for the iconic dinosaur-filled adventures in “Jurassic Park. Kauai’s Na Pali Coast and Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch are must-visit spots for franchise fans (Travel + Leisure).

  • Thailand: The third season of “The White Lotus, set in Thailand, has also stirred interest in the country’s picturesque beaches and luxurious resorts (theweek).

The Allure of the Screen

What makes set-jetting so appealing? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Immersive Experience: Visiting locations seen on screen allows fans to immerse themselves in the worlds of their favorite characters. It’s a chance to walk the same streets and visit the same places, creating a deeper connection with the narrative.
  2. Unique Memories: Set-jetting offers exceptional travel experiences beyond typical tourist activities. Whether dining at a restaurant featured in a movie or exploring lesser-known locales, these trips create lasting memories.
  3. Cultural Exploration: Many films and TV shows showcase their settings’ culture, history, and beauty. Set-jetting encourages travelers to learn more about these destinations and appreciate their unique qualities.

Planning Your Set-Jetting Adventure

If you’re considering a set-jetting trip, here are some tips and reasons to utilize your travel advisor to make the most of your adventure:

  • Research: Look up filming locations and plan your itinerary around them. Many fan sites and travel blogs offer detailed guides on famous movie and TV show locations. Contact your travel advisor. As travel advisors, we are privy to the logistics and destination knowledge of creating a seamless package experience.
  • Explore Beyond the Screen: While visiting specific filming spots is exciting, take advantage of the opportunity to explore the broader area. This is where your travel advisor can truly add some value. Often, a destination’s true charm lies in its hidden gems and local culture.
  • Stay Respectful: Many filming locations are people’s homes and workplaces. We always want to respect local residents and follow any guidelines or restrictions. As travel advisors, we are linked with the various tourism boards to ensure that the experiences you visit will not infringe upon the cultural limits when planning your trip.

Conclusion

Set-jetting is more than just a trend; it’s a way for fans to bring their favorite stories to life and create their own adventures. Whether you’re a fan of epic fantasies, classic dramas, or thrilling sci-fi, there’s a destination waiting to be explored. Late Morning: Walk along the beautiful Oneroa Beach or venture to the more secluded Palm Beach for relaxation and sunbathing.

Lunch: Indulge in a leisurely lunch at one of Waiheke’s renowned wineries. With over 30 vineyards on the island, you’ll have many options. Many wineries offer exquisite dining experiences with stunning vineyard views and delicious local wines.

Afternoon: Post-lunch, immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty. Embark on a hike along one of the many scenic trails, like the Te Ara Hura track network. These trails, designed for all fitness levels, showcase the island’s diverse landscapes, promising a journey of discovery and awe.

Evening: As your day winds down, enjoy a wine tasting at another one of the island’s top wineries or visit a local brewery. If time allows, catch the sunset at Cable Bay Vineyards or Mudbrick Vineyard for a truly magical end to your day.

Passport for Your Palate-The Frozen Gaucho

While one of the major perks of my job is getting to travel this wonderful world, I only sometimes have the time to get away to the destination. Still, I am fortunate to be invited to many tourism events that expose me to the destination and its culture. I recently had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by The Uruguay Tourism Board. Uruguay Unveiled was held in Brooklyn, New York, at the restuarant Tabare Bushwick. Tabare is an indigenous name that means “someone who lives far from town.” The restuarant, I hear from the locals I met, is a hot spot for entertainment. We enjoyed a full fare of their traditional Uruguayan cuisine throughout the presentation.

One of the items we were greeted with was the Frozen Gaucho.

Frozen Gaucho is a cocktail that stands out in Uruguay’s diverse drink landscape, blending local ingredients and flavors. While it may not be as widely recognized as some traditional Uruguayan drinks like Medio y Medio (a mix of dry white wine and sweet sparkling wine) or Clerico (a fruit and wine punch), the Frozen Gaucho has gained attention for its refreshing qualities, making it a favorite during the hot summer months. It was the perfect choice given the heat of that evening and the crowd for the event.

The recipe for a Frozen Gaucho typically includes ingredients like pineapple juice, coconut cream, and lime juice, similar to those used in other tropical cocktails. The drink can be compared to variations of the piña colada or other frozen cocktails that mix fruit juices with spirits and ice, creating a smooth, icy beverage perfect for cooling down.

If you’re looking to try this cocktail at home, according to their menu, this drink was a combination of:

  • Yerba Mate Vodka (Yerba Mate is an herb usually drunk like hot tea, but is making a rise in appearance in cocktails)
  • Limon
  • Agave
  • Ice

These ingredients were blended until smooth and served in a chilled glass. Ours was served in a flute style and garnished with a cinnamon stick. You could also add a garnish, like a lime wheel or pineapple slice, to give it a festive touch.

Overall, the Frozen Gaucho embodies the spirit of Uruguay’s vibrant cocktail culture, offering a delightful and cooling experience with each sip. And the event and ambiance of Tabare left me wanting to return and plan an escape to this beautiful country.

Personal Review-AmaWaterways, the AmaVerde

My journey on the AmaVerde, one of AmaWaterways’ luxurious river cruise ships, was a testament to exceptional service.

From the moment I stepped on board, I was enveloped in the ship’s elegant design and warm ambiance. With their genuine smiles and impeccable hospitality, the staff made me feel like a valued guest, setting the stage for a remarkable journey. Two standouts were the ship’s cruise manager and the wellness director.

The staterooms on the AmaVerde are beautifully appointed, offering a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication. My room was an entry-level room on deck one with two rectangular windows at the water level. It worked perfectly, given the amount of time my partner and I spent was very limited as we took in all the wonderful activities offered daily. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and there was ample closet space and a cute seating area, making it a cozy retreat after a day of exploring.

Dining on the AmaVerde was a culinary delight. Each meal was a feast featuring a variety of gourmet dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The chefs clearly put a lot of thought and creativity into the menus, and I especially enjoyed the regional specialties that gave me a taste of the local culture. The wine selection was excellent, and the sommelier’s recommendations were always spot on. I suggest you go with the Chef’s Choice. They did not disappoint.

One of the most exciting aspects of the AmaVerde is the range of enriching excursions and activities offered. Each port of call provided unique experiences, from guided city tours to wine tastings and scenic bike rides. The excursions, meticulously organized and led by knowledgeable guides, brought the destinations to life with their insights and stories, leaving me with a sense of excitement and wonder. Our personal favorite was the 20-mile bike ride along the Danube in Weissenkirchen.

Onboard, there was never a dull moment. The daily programs included informative lectures, wellness activities, relaxation, and live entertainment. I particularly enjoyed the evening performances, which showcased local musicians and dancers, adding an authentic touch to the experience.

The AmaVerde also features fantastic wellness facilities. With its heated pool, jacuzzi, and ample lounge space, the sun deck was the perfect spot to relax and take in the views. The fitness center was well-equipped, and I appreciated the morning yoga sessions and daily digestive walks that helped keep me limber and counteract the chef’s excellent food.

Overall, my time on the AmaVerde was exceptional. The luxurious accommodations, outstanding service, delectable dining, and enriching activities made for a truly memorable river cruise. I highly recommend AmaWaterways and the AmaVerde to anyone seeking a high-quality, immersive travel experience.
