Reasons To Purchase Travel Insurance

In today’s travel world, travel insurance has truly become a non-negotiable trip item, covering your rental car, flight only, cruise, and everything else on your itineraries. I have seen more issues as we have come out of the pandemic, where travel plans have gone differently than planned.

What are some examples of things I’ve seen?

  • I have had clients who had a medical event before travel and had to cancel their trip because they could no longer travel.
  • I have had clients who have been injured or fallen ill during travel, had to seek medical attention and even some who have had to return home.
  • I have had clients lose items or have items stolen.
  • I have had clients experience various reasons for flight delays and cancellations, from weather to birds hitting the plane.

The world and life are absolutely unpredictable, so there are several compelling reasons to purchase travel insurance.

Here are several compelling reasons to purchase travel insurance before embarking on a trip:

  1. Trip cancellation or interruption coverage: Travel plans can be unexpectedly disrupted due to various reasons such as illness, injury, or the death of a family member. Travel insurance can provide reimbursement for non-refundable expenses and help recoup the costs of canceled or interrupted trips.
  2. Medical emergencies and expenses: Healthcare costs can be exorbitant in certain countries, and your regular health insurance may not cover you while traveling abroad. Travel insurance can provide coverage for emergency medical expenses, including hospital stays, doctor visits, and emergency medical evacuations.
  3. Lost or delayed baggage: Airlines occasionally misplace or lose luggage, leaving travelers without their belongings. Travel insurance can offer compensation for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, as well as provide reimbursement for essential items in case of baggage delay.
  4. Travel delays: Delays in transportation can disrupt travel plans, leading to additional expenses for accommodation, meals, or alternative transportation. Travel insurance can provide coverage for these expenses, offering financial protection against unexpected delays due to factors like inclement weather, natural disasters, or airline strikes.
  5. Emergency assistance services: Many travel insurance policies offer access to 24/7 emergency assistance services. This can be particularly helpful when facing language barriers, seeking local medical providers, or navigating unfamiliar situations.
  6. Travel-related emergencies: Travel insurance may cover emergencies such as trip curtailment due to a terrorist attack, political unrest, or natural disasters at your travel destination. It can provide peace of mind and financial protection in such unforeseen circumstances.
  7. Rental car coverage: If you plan to rent a car during your trip, travel insurance can often provide coverage for rental car damages or theft, saving you from incurring additional expenses or relying on costly rental car insurance.
  8. Additional benefits: Depending on the policy, travel insurance can offer additional benefits such as coverage for accidental death or dismemberment, legal assistance, and assistance with lost travel documents.

It’s essential to carefully review and understand the terms and conditions of any travel insurance policy before purchasing, as coverage and exclusions may vary. Additionally, consider the specific needs of your trip, your destination, and your personal circumstances when deciding on the right level of coverage.

Travel agents are not insurance agents, but we can provide you with coverage options and pricing for your travel. We work with several travel insurance providers. We can make recommendations based on your experiences as we never leave home without it, but any specific policy questions should be directed to the travel insurance company. Be sure to always discuss your options for your itinerary when booking and when making your deposit payment, as most companies have a pre-existing medical condition requiring insurance to be booked at deposit or within two weeks of depositing. There are some exceptions. For more details on the reasons to purchase travel insurance, speak with your trusted travel advisor.

The Softer Side of New Zealand

New Zealand is more than well known for its adventure. In fact, they have created quite a few extreme and fun sports for the bold to try, such as Bungy jumping. And you may think I am not adventurous, so why would I visit New Zealand? There is so much more than the thrill side, though I tell you, as an acclaimed scardey cat, you should consider trying one of the more blood-racing activities at least once.

For those not ready, there is the softer side of New Zealand. New Zealand shines with breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and great food. You will have plenty to explore beyond the adventure sports the country is so well-known for.

Nature: New Zealand is truly a nature lovers’ paradise. As an island, of course, it has many breathtaking coastlines and sea life in water and air to go with it. The center astounds with magnificent mountains and lush valleys. There are plenty of opportunities to explore New Zealand by foot with hikes and walks or enjoy a guided tour. The people love to share the stories of creation with visitors. Visit places like the sparking glow worm caves, the ancient trees of Waipoua Forest, and the serene beauty of the lakes such as Lake Wakatipu. The abundance of explorations is endless.

Culture: Simply put, the Māori are beautiful. A trip that did not include some time learning about how they came to New Zealand and their history before and after the Europeans would be devasting. There are guided tours with local Māori that will take you to Maugawahu (Mount Eden)- one of the ancestral mountains for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and cultural performances where you will see the kapa haka group perform. And beyond this, you can dive into New Zealand’s other rich history with stops at places such as Napier to discover New Zealand’s art deco history with a ride around town in a vintage car. The options are vast and deep to choose from, tip to tip.

Food: New Zealand produces some of the best wines in the world. (sorry, Australia they are my favorite) With wine regions throughout the North and South Islands, you can meander your way through the country one winery at a time. And what is a good wine without a good pairing? New Zealand has some of the best seafood, ethnic cuisine styles from around the world, and of course, lamb. And you should try the venison as well as they are one of the top exporters of their venison. A great stop-off for food and wine, and often missed the Hawke’s Bay region. Some might say Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s break basket and is a destination to savor.

I’ve only glossed over what can be considered the softer side of New Zealand. Contact a New Zealand specialist for a trip that genuinely suits your tastes and activity level. We work with you to design your perfect itinerary.

7 Fun Facts About New Zealand

New Zealand in Maori is called Aotearoa, which means ” Long White Cloud.” It is about the size of our Colorado, yet runs long and narrow like California. While most people are familiar with the North and South Islands, there is also a third island called Stewart Island below the South Island. My most recent visit took me to the North and South. New Zealand has a reputation for adventure, but this destination goes far beyond adventure with its incredible Maori Culture, Outstanding Wines, and Breathtaking Landscapes.

Here are 7 Fun Facts About New Zealand you might not have known:

  • The locals are called “Kiwis” not because of their famous flightless nocturnal bird but because of the green kiwi fruit. They are the third largest in the production of the kiwi.
  • English is the primary spoken language, but Maori is the traditional language. Maori is now part of the school curriculum; you will hear all announcements and signage in both languages.
  • Milford Sound has only two permanent flowing waterfalls throughout the year. Only when you visit during rain will you see cascades of waterfalls.
  • There are over 70 wineries in the Hawke’s Bay region alone.
  • Hawke’s Bay is the “food bowl” of New Zealand.
  • The mammals in New Zealand did not exist before European settlers. There were only birds.
  • The Maori settled in New Zealand approximately 100 years before Europeans discovered it.

The shortlist is only the tip of the iceberg (New Zealand does boast some great glaciers, too). Have these 7 Fun Facts about New Zealand piqued your interest in learning more about the youngest country (bonus fact)? It is also still continually developing and changing. Be Fit To Travel

How do travel and fitness go hand in hand? I will share how fitness plays a significant role in your traveling and has shaped my traveling career. You will discover why it is vital to be fit to travel. I will share two things you may or may not know about me, depending on whether you have booked travel or followed my adventures. One is an essential part of who I am and how I approach life and living, and the other is an inspiration and a reminder of why you must take care of yourself and do when the opportunity presents itself.

I have a separate component called Be Fit to Travel within Boomerang Escapes.

Being fit to travel came from my long history of being in the fitness industry and discovering over the years how taxing travel can be on the body. I was always a fitness buff, having been at the prime of my life when aerobics first took its hold, and shiny spandex was the attire. The love of fitness established in my youth carried over into my early family life as I received my personal trainer and fitness instructor certificates just before discovering I was pregnant with my first child. I taught classes and maintained my certification for about ten years before. Fast forward to my mid-forties, when I opened the agency and life’s stresses had a detrimental impact on my health, I returned to fitness as a motivational coach for Bodi (formerly Beachbody). At this point in my travel career, I was on the road nearly every month, realizing that if I was going to keep up with the pace of activities and enjoy all the things offered, I needed to regain my health. I witnessed many travelers who were also sidelined and unable to participate in something as simple as an easy-grade walk through a rainforest. I had clients who had to cancel major trips due to health issues arising before travel that likely might have been prevented had they spent a little more time on healthcare.

And this is where the second influence comes in. It is something I will never forget. It occurred long before I had any idea I would be a travel agent or, let alone, own an agency. A woman who was in her sixties and ran a consignment shop gave me a crucial piece of advice one day when I was selling some of the kid’s clothes at her shop. We were discussing my husband, who was living and working in Germany at the time. I shared with her how I wanted to see it for myself but wasn’t sure about traveling with the kids and the cost if I should do it. She then told me their dream of traveling the world did not happen. She told me how they had planned to travel the world in retirement. She worked and saved only to have retirement day come and take the dream away when her husband ended up on a dialysis machine. She told me, “Do not wait; go when you can. You never know what will happen in life.” Needless to say, I went to Germany with my toddlers in tow that year to visit their dad.

It’s always possible to begin that journey of health. And it isn’t about the swimsuit body but about longevity and mobility. You want to truly enjoy your rewards when you have worked as hard as you have worked. Feel free to follow @BeFitToTravel or join my private motivational fitness group to spur you on your wellness adventure.

As May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, I encourage you to BE FIT TO TRAVEL.

Expect Delays

The first quarter of 2023 has zoomed by. Travel is up. We are busier than ever. You would think by all accounts that we are entirely past the pandemic’s repercussions. On some fronts, we are. The days of required masks and extra shots for Covid no longer pertain. From the naked eye, the world appears to look like it did before. But…and it is a big but because one key factor still significantly impacts the smoothness of travel.

What is the one key factor I am alluding to? It is the human body.  Or should I say lack of bodies? Until this one factor is resolved, expect delays.

As the remaining lingering countries opened their borders mid to late last year and began pushing out mega advertising to entice travelers back to their lands, they forgot one thing. Most companies had downsized their staffing to keep up with the overhead while there was no travel. The travel demand came back tenfold. Millions of people shut up for two years, eager to take those long put-off trips. And others are ready to go as they realize they shouldn’t put it off until tomorrow. Yet, the industry, and not just travel, has yet to be able to fill its staffing back to pre-covid levels while the demand and number of travelers are rapidly passing the years before the pandemic. I already see 2023 for Boomerang Escapes being a banner year and blowing by 2018 and 2019 traveler numbers.

What does this staff shortage cause? In a word, delays. There are delays everywhere.

Delays in getting pricing back so we can produce quotes, delays in receiving documents, delays in handling refunds for cancellations, and delays in getting paid. If you didn’t know, most of what a travel advisor earns comes from commissions paid out after the client travels. Usually 30 days after the client has returned from travel.

What can you do? Simply put, have patience and faith in your travel advisor. We are as frustrated, if not more frustrated than you, as every delay, at least in my eyes, reflects upon my service. Even when I know I can’t control what is happening. I know from many a call with managers within the industry they are doing their best to get their staff and functions back up to full speed. I have faith that they will do it. If you are preparing to travel, expect there may be a few bumps in the road yet this year as the travel industry continues to get back on its feet after such an extensive pause.

My Favorite Places in Australia

Lisa, what are your favorite places in Australia? This question I get all the time when working with my clients. Where would you go?

It is the most challenging question for me to answer because I love every experience I’ve had over my seven visits. (as of the time of this post) For me, Australia could never disappoint, and she continually outdoes herself whenever I go. Just when I think she can’t deliver more, she does.

For me, it is a destination that has captured my heart and soul. However, I will give you a short list of some of the places that hold some fond memories and that I would certainly return to again and again.

My Favorite Places in Australia:

  • Whitsundays-A collection of islands off the coast of Queensland located on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Choose any of the islands for a perfect relaxing end to a long trip or a romantic escape. A visit to Whitehaven beach and a helicopter ride out over Heart Reef is necessary.
  • Rainforest Walk-The lush green vegetation, babbling water, and history of this ancient place are beyond words. Experience the Daintree with a local Aboriginal guide. One of my favorites was a Dreamtime Walk.
  • Kangaroo Island– Australia’s unique landscape and spotting of notable wild wildlife highlights here. Enjoy authentic eats while dining on a cliff looking out over the ocean or grilling in the bush.
  • The Outback-I spent two weeks entirely in the lower portion of the Northern Territory hiking and climbing gorges, canyons, and more. Uluru and the surroundings feel like the heart and soul of Australia. Another outstanding experience here was a helicopter over the land at sunrise.
  • Western Australia– A place I need to explore further, and despite my overwhelming love of koalas and getting a cuddle when I can, two of my best wildlife experiences were here—visiting Rottnest Island to meet Australia’s happiest animal, the quokka. During my encounter, the quokka decided to curl up in the crook of my arm on the cold, wet day we visited. And then the exhilarating swim with whale sharks. Words can’t describe the feeling of seeing these beautiful creatures very up close.

Wow, the memories are flooding in. I could go on and on. I am truly overcome with emotions when I think of all the beautiful things I’ve had the privilege to do in Australia and the people I’ve met. As you can probably tell, I may be a bit biased, but I genuinely believe you should discover Australia.

Walk It Out

The best way to see a destination is often by setting off on foot. I am that proverbial person that says, “We can walk it.” Don’t know what to do with the day, then start walking. I find you stumble upon some of the most significant discoveries when you take to the pavement or the off-beaten path. It is a fabulous learning experience with discoveries around every bend.

Australia has plenty of walks to discover. Or hikes if you are in for a bit more workout. I’ve climbed an array of gorges, canyons, and more! I’ve had the thrill of experiencing a climb up Peak’s Passage on Hamilton Island, trekking around King’s Canyon Rim, and scurrying down the hillsides in the Blue Mountains to witness cascading falls. No matter your state or territory, you will find somewhere unique to explore on foot.

Australia makes it even easier to Walk it Out.

Australia has what is known as the Great Walks of Australia. For the fitness buff, nature buff, and explorer, these are a variety of walks throughout the regions and in varying degrees of difficulty. Some are multiple days, and some you can do only part of. No matter your choice you need to try one.

5 Reasons to Visit Australia

When polled, do you know which destination travelers always put at the top for their dream vacation spot? You guessed it, Australia. Australia continues to be on everyone’s wish list. Now more than ever, travelers are ready to make those big trips! Australia has an endless list of reasons to make that trip “Down Under,” from its beauty to the people. Let me surmise it with a simple top five list in no specific order. As you know, I could write pages about all the reasons I love this destination.

5 Reasons to Visit Australia

  1. Wildlife. Australia has some of the most unique and unusual nature. Much of their wildlife is only native to Australia. This is because years ago when the earth plates separated, it left Australia an island nation. You have animals such as the koala, the kangaroo, the wombat, the echidna, the Tasmanian devil, the quokka, and so many more. And don’t forget the sea life. You have the incredible opportunity to experience many of them up close in their own habitat. No matter which animal has your fancy, you are bound to have an experience you will never forget.
  2. Wine and Food. With Australia boasting over 65 wine regions, it is no wonder it is a wine and culinary sensation. Australia has a variety of influences in its cuisine depending on the region you are visiting. You will find more Greek influence in, say, Melbourne, while if visiting the top end, you will find more Asian influences. Top chefs abound, and there are plenty of experiences for the ever-popular farm or sea to table for travelers to fancy their taste buds.
  3. Coastlines. Being an island nation, Australia has more beaches than you could ever visit in a year. In fact, they have over 10,000 beaches. With so much coastline, water activities are abundant. Learn to surf, sail the seas, swim with sharks, whatever your heart desires. Surf, sand, and sun in every state and territory make it an ideal vacation spot any time of year.
  4. Culture. Australia has the oldest indigenous culture. Aboriginals have been on the lands for no less than 60,000 years. Learn their ancient ways and discover how they use the land. In addition, Australia is a wealth of art, music, and sports. Visit during the festival season for an extra spectacular experience.
  5. The People. Yes, they have that lovely accent and sometimes unusual slang, but for the most part, they speak English. I know this can be a draw for those not as well-traveled to have that bit of comfort when abroad. But better than understanding them is enjoying their fantastic outlook on life. They are extremely friendly and laid back. The colloquial “No worries” is precisely that.

Are you ready to go? Be sure to reach out to your Australia Expert. While there are so many great reasons to go, do remember it is the size of the United States, so you will want some help in creating that perfect experience. Like me, you will find yourself visiting much more than once.

The Winter Road Trip Short Checklist

I am no stranger to winter or winter road conditions. While many of you know me from my years in Tennessee when I began my travel career, I have as much if not more of my life spent in the north. I have lived in Wisconsin on four different periods of my life, including my driving development years and living in Vermont three different periods. And of course, now I reside here in New Jersey, where we just had a lovely dumping of the white stuff from the most recent Nor’easter.

With many of us still sticking close to home and hitting the roads for our vacations, it is an excellent time to share some of the items I keep in my car to be road-ready. I’ve created a shortlist of things you will typically find in my car during the winter months or when I make a winter road trip. I like to ski and visit the mountains, not to mention I will use any excuse to hit the roads for travel.

Winter Road Trip Short Checklist

  • A blanket. I keep a blanket in my car year-round. In the winter, it is there for warmth should you end up stranded on the side of the road. In the summer, it is a beach blanket or park blanket.
  • A shovel. I have a collapsable shovel that I throw into the car when the cold months arrive. It comes in handy if you have to dig yourself out unexpectedly.
  • A bottle of wiper fluid. Be sure to get the wiper fluid that is good for at least -20 degrees below zero. Regular wiper fluid will freeze up in the spouts.
  • A bag/box of cat litter.   Cat litter works great for providing some traction if your wheels are spinning. The extra weight of the bag or box is good for keeping the tail end of the car swishing. The extra weight grounds the car better.
  • A bottle of water. I always have my water bottle with me. Again, if, for some reason, you are off the road waiting for some assistance, you can remain hydrated.
  • A roll of paper towels. Paper towels can serve many purposes, from cleaning up messes, wiping your nose, or even wiping your ass. Having had three kids and multiple pets in the cars over the years, finding paper towels rolling around in the back is pretty standard year-round.
  • A snack. Anyone who knows me well knows I usually have something in the bottom of my purse. I am one of those hangry people. However, traveling during winter, this snack may need to be your meal until help arrives.
  • Jumper cables.   I have a set that has its own power source. I don’t need another vehicle, but I need to make sure I have fully charged them before traveling.

Those are my winter car kit basics. And I must admit I am not always good about remembering to keep it stocked on regular road days even though I should because traveling the parkway to work here can be just as dangerous as taking a road trip to the mountains in Vermont. Share with us some of the things you have in your emergency kit. I know there are a few other things that I should include, but this is a good start for anyone looking to hit the winter roads.

Passport for Your Palate-“Garbage” Fried Rice

Fried rice has to be one of my favorite go-to recipes. It is perfect to use leftovers, especially after large holiday meals. I always whip up a batch around then, but it works so well anytime you have foods to use up from your refrigerator, thus the name “Garbage” Fried Rice.

While my standard fried rice always has bacon, egg, green onion, and typically peas and carrots, you will find almost any protein or combination of vegetables in it at any given sitting. I do a lot of meal planning, so I throw this recipe in near the end of the week to use up any remaining items in the fridge.

“Garbage” Fried Rice

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 3 eggs
  • vegetable oil, if needed
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger. You can substitute powdered ginger. Only use about a 1/4 tsp if using powdered.
  • 8 green onion or about 1/2 regular onion
  • Veggies, chopped into small bite-size pieces. The photo has carrots, celery, cauliflower, and peppers.
  • 8-16 ounces protein, again whatever your leftover meat is. In the image, I used chicken.
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce. I eyeball this based on the color the rice turns.

Instructions:

  1. Cook rice in the steamer. Typically the rice will be one cup dry to two cups of water placed in the steamer.
  2. Cook the bacon in a wok or large skillet. Stirring often and until crisp. Remove bacon and reserve drippings from wok.
  3. Whisk the eggs and pepper in a small pyrex measuring cup.
  4. Add a bit of the reserved drippings to the wok. Pour 1/3 of the egg mixture into the wok. Tilt pan, so it covers the bottom. Do this over medium-high heat until the egg is set. Remove egg “pancake” to cutting board. Repeat process twice more. If you don’t have enough reserved bacon fat to add about 1/2 tablespoon for each egg, substitute vegetable oil. Chop up the cooked eggs on the cutting board and reserve for later.
  5. Heat another 2 tablespoons of bacon grease or vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the ginger and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add rice, cook, and stir for 5 minutes. Stir in your veggies, protein, eggs, bacon, onion. I add one at a time, adding the one that needs the most cooking or heating back up first. When all items are mixed in, finish with adding the soy sauce. Cook and stir until heated through.
  6. Serve.

Makes roughly 8 servings.
