Let’s face it—flights to Australia or New Zealand are long. But what if I told you that instead of dreading the journey, you could turn it into part of the adventure?

Enter Hawaii, Fiji, and Tahiti—three dreamy destinations that make ideal stopovers before or after your trip down under. These islands not only give you a chance to break up the flight but also to immerse yourself in a whole new experience, adding a bit of tropical magic to your journey.

Choose Your Perfect Stopover

Choose any one of these destinations before or after the flight over, or even consider a stop pre- and post-trip to Australia or New Zealand, which will give you a full South Pacific welcome and experience.

1. Hawaii – Your Tropical Welcome Mat

Hawaii is the perfect pitstop if you’re flying from North America. With direct flights to Honolulu from most major cities, it’s easy to hop over to paradise before continuing to Australia or New Zealand.

  • Why Hawaii?
    • Easy Accessibility: It’s a natural halfway point with lots of flight options, making it easy to slide into vacation mode right away.
    • Time to Recharge: Kick back on the beaches, sip a mai tai, and prepare your mind and body for the adventure ahead.
    • Rich Polynesian Culture: Take a moment to immerse yourself into the unique culture of Hawaii, whether it’s catching a traditional luau or visiting historical sites like Pearl Harbor.
    • Best Spots: Check out the iconic Waikiki Beach or head up to the North Shore for some quiet, less touristy vibes.

2. Fiji – The Warmest Welcome You’ll Ever Get

Fiji is known for its hospitality—seriously, the people here redefine “welcoming.” Whether you stop before heading to Australia or break up the return trip, Fiji offers luxury, tranquility, and adventure all wrapped into one.

  • Why Fiji?
    • Perfectly Located: Fiji is positioned right between the US and Australia/New Zealand, making it a natural stopover.
    • Relax in Style: Think overwater bungalows, warm breezes, and sunsets that make you never want to leave.
    • Cultural Immersion: Fijians greet you with a heartfelt “Bula!”—you’ll feel at home the moment you arrive with lovely music and welcome song as you emerge from customs.
    • Adventure Meets Relaxation: Whether you’re into lounging or you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie, you can snorkel, dive, or float your way through this South Pacific paradise.

3. Tahiti – Romance in French Polynesia

Tahiti brings the wow factor. It’s one of those destinations that makes you feel like you’re in a movie (many of your favorites have been filmed in the islands, such as Mutiny on the Bounty and Couples Retreat) —crystal-clear lagoons, volcanic peaks, and the kind of romance that’s hard to match. Whether you’re stopping on the way or wrapping up your adventure, Tahiti is the place to indulge.

  • Why Tahiti?
    • Romance and Luxury: Ideal for couples (honeymoon, anyone?) or anyone looking to sprinkle a little magic on their journey.
    • Cultural Fusion: The blend of Polynesian traditions with French influence creates an experience that’s as rich as it is laid-back.
    • Activities for Every Mood: Whether you want to dive into the lagoons, hike up a volcanic mountain, or just sip cocktails while watching the sun set over turquoise waters, Tahiti’s got you covered.
    • Worth a Longer Layover: If you have a few extra days to spare, Tahiti’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger in and really soak up. Extra days here allow you to explore more than one of her many enchanting islands.

Incorporating a stop in Hawaii, Fiji, or Tahiti isn’t just a way to break up your long-haul flight—it’s a chance to add another destination to your adventure. Each island brings its own flavor, from Hawaii’s laid-back vibe to Fiji’s famous hospitality and Tahiti’s romantic allure. So why not turn that long flight into an extended getaway? After all, who doesn’t want an excuse to “Return to Your Happy Place before or after exploring the amazing wonders of Australia or New Zealand?

Off the Rail: Restaurant Review

Several family members and I enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at Off the Rail during my recent stay in Elkhart Lake for my niece’s wedding. By the way, she was absolutely stunning, and I couldn’t be happier with the young man, Josh, who has now joined our extended family. This cozy, train-themed café is open for both breakfast and lunch, and we couldn’t resist sampling a variety of their mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches. I opted for the Flying Scotsman Bagel, which came loaded with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, onion, and cucumber—a delightful combination that hit all the right notes.

The family favorite was the McRail, featuring scrambled egg, ham, and Vern’s sharp cheddar on a perfectly toasted English muffin. Another standout was the Commuter, a panini made with scrambled egg, bacon, and Vern’s sharp cheddar on sourdough bread. We couldn’t get over how incredible the Wisconsin cheddar was on both sandwiches—it added a rich, creamy flavor that truly elevated the experience.

What made it even better was that my daughter, Veronica, could enjoy her sandwich gluten-free, as Off the Rail offers gluten-free options for all of its creations. The service was fast and efficient—after placing our order and receiving a number, we chose our spot to dine. Whether you sit indoors, outside, or take your order to go, Off the Rail is a must-visit in Elkhart Lake for a delicious, locally sourced breakfast or lunch!” And seeing we liked it so much, we repeated the experience over the weekend; I’d say I give it 5 stars for a yummy breakfast experience.
