What's Your Signature Cocktail?
"Shaken, not stirred." Despite your generation, this phrase probably immediately sparked images of James Bond and his signature martinis. Martinis in general evoke a sense of sophistication as we see a sleek, young, handsome man dressed in a tuxedo float through our minds. Signature drinks can be associated with a person, country, hotel, bar, city, you name it. When you think of Russia, vodka probably comes to mind and when you think of Mexico you probably envision a margarita or shot of tequila. A signature cocktail doesn't even have to be a cocktail. Consider tea. When we think tea, Great Britain and Australia come to mind. And I bet, when you think of an Oreo cookie you picture a big glass of milk sitting next to it, right?
Most often, my signature drink is a lemon water but when I am looking to "kick it up a notch" I reach for a vodka lime soda. I was introduced to this refreshing drink in a can during my last visit to Australia. We were on the Quicksilver, returning from a wonderful afternoon on the Great Barrier Reef when Emma, our guide and tour operator brought me one. Of course, I had requested a water, but you see when you travel to other countries, quite often you are expected to partake in their customs. In Australia, it is almost sacrilegious to be caught drinking a water, especially if you are in bar as I would soon find out. Anyway, Emma brought me a UDL which is a brand of vodka lime soda in a can. I actually enjoyed it quite well and it has become my signature cocktail.
As my travels through Queensland progressed, I would request the bartender mix me a vodka lime soda. It is a very basic drink consisting of club soda, vodka and lime juice. The glass is then garnished with a lime wedge. Be sure to request real lime juice over the bottled. Fresh lime juice makes all the difference. Here is a basic recipe I found upon my return at food.com. Since returning home and introducing it to my friends various modifications have been made. A popular choice is to now substitute the club soda for a LaCroix Lime Soda. Of course, I still dabbled in other cocktail creations while visiting Down Under. One of my favorite things to do is try the signature cocktail from the bar or restaurant menu or the local drink for the area. This past trip I tried everything from hard cider to tropical concoctions served inside a coconut. It is always an experience. Some things get swallowed with a smile while others are ready to be spit out and swallowed hard. It is always an adventure to try new and unusual things which, in my opinion, is part of the fun in traveling.
Please feel free to share with us in the comments below your favorite signature cocktail. I'll let you know if I give it a try.
