Aboriginal Australians, also referred to as Aborigines, are the indigenous ancestors to Australia and Tasmania. They migrated more than 70,000 years ago from Asia and Africa and arrived in Australia about 50,000 years ago. There is a great diversity among indigenous communities of Australia, but one common thread is their beautiful artwork.

The artwork includes painting on natural items such as leaves, bark, and wood. The dot painting was a means of telling stories and recording ritual practices, passing the stories verbally as well as visually. Often times the stories depicted were secret, only special members of the tribe were allowed to know. So, they would paint dots over the pictures as a form of camouflage. One of the most common stories told in dot paintings is the Aboriginal creation story-Dreamtime.

Aboriginal art can be found all over Australia. However, a fun way to teach about it and get kids excited is to have them create their own form of dot art. We recently did this at an Australian themed Easter egg hunt and event at the Tennessee Safari Park. The painting station was very simple to create with some paints, Q-tips, and outlines of Australian animals. The paints you select should be of earth colors such as red, yellow, green and brown. The Aboriginals obtained a lot of their colors from grinding ochre.     Here is a link from DLTK 's Crafts For Kids to get you started on your own fun creations. Australian Aboriginal Dot Art
