Aussie tour operator Echidna Walkabout has won “Best for Wildlife Conservation” in the prestigious World Responsible Travel Awards*.

The awards celebrate the shining stars and world leaders of tourism. Judging is rigorous, led by Prof. Harold Goodwin of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism and including Dr. Matt Walpole of the United Nations Environment Programme.

The judges commended Echidna Walkabout for their truly innovative approach, covering all aspects of sustainable tourism – scientific research, invasive species management, indigenous and local community involvement. The judges say: “Echidna Walkabout puts wildlife conservation at the heart of all their wildlife tours. Which sounds like the norm but when income raised from tours is ploughed back into serious conservation research, this takes tourism onto another level.”

Speaking at the ceremony before a packed audience of over 500

tourism professionals, media, ministers and officials, Justin Francis, managing director of pinpointed what makes the Award winners the leaders in responsible tourism: “Our winners have a vision that extends beyond the commercial – linking business success with the wellbeing of local communities and the longevity of their environments. They want to make profits with principles, communicate balance sheets alongside beliefs, and won’t undermine passion in the pursuit of professionalism. They are resilient, determined, humanising advocates for their destinations. They are the future of tourism.”

In London to accept the award, co-owner and founder Janine Duffy said “Huge thanks to our passionate, dedicated team in Australia, our travellers and to the wild koalas. Koalas will be extinct in the wild in 20 years if we don't act aggressively soon. We are determined not to let that happen. We have a plan, and responsible tourism is key – we will leverage this opportunity to inspire a grass roots movement to save habitat for koalas.”

Ensuring koalas, and other Aussie wildlife, have a future in the wild is the mission for the social enterprise business. Echidna Walkabout's long-running Wild Koala Research Project led to the discovery that koalas avoid areas of forest dominated by Boneseed - an introduced weed. So the company started encouraging tour guests to remove one weed to make a home for a koala. The “Make a Home for Clancy Koala” project is now so successful that tour guests are removing 30,000 weeds each year, and wild koala sightings have increased by 370%!

Travellers can get involved with Echidna Walkabout's award winning programs on four day trips to the wildlife coast of far East Gippsland, or on a wildllife and Aboriginal Culture journey to the Mungo/Mildura Outback. They also run very popular three day Great Ocean Road tours and one day Koalas & Kangaroos IN THE WILD tours. On every tour travellers have an opportunity to help a wild koala, or to prevent marine life entanglement by removing ghost nets from remote ocean beaches.
